- Circoli are small clubs organized by associations; you pay to become a member the first time you go. They organize concerts, lectures, and other cultural events. Some of them are pretty rollicking.
- Centro sociali are alternative clubs located in formerly empty buildings which young people have occupied and put to use. There is a long history of centri sociali in Bologna and other large Italian cities. Often centers of political and social activism, they're great places to hang out, hear live music, dance, and get drinks at prices lower than anywhere else in Bologna. In some, it's also possible to dance to music that can be rather hardcore, depending on which night of the week. These are the places to go for R&B, drum 'n' bass, techno, and house.
