In Bologna, both the school system and the city do their best to make life easier for busy parents and their children by providing services like public day care, before and after school programs for working parents, and a number of summer activities.
Many schools are quite used to having children from other countries in the classroom. This does not always mean that special programs offered, as it is up to individual teachers to decide whether or not they want to have courses on different cultures or religions organized for themselves or for their pupils. But generally speaking, the schools try to accommodate foreigners and most parents are satisfied with the education their children receive.
:: THE ITALIAN EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM
For the moment, school is mandatory from age six through 15. Children attend scuola elementare (elementary school) from age six to 11, scuola media (middle school) from age 11 to 14, and scuola superiore (secondary school) beginning at age 14. Many students choose to continue past the age of 15 by completing a five year secondary school. Neverthess, the scholastic reform is near to change all the system that will be from 5 to 16.
All public schools fall under the jurisdiction of the Ministero della pubblica istruzione at the national level and are administered locally by the Provveditorato agli studi.
Bologna's pre-schools have an outstanding reputation. Parents can place children aged three months through three years in asilo nido (day care) and children three to six years of age may attend a scuola materna (nursery school). For day care, parents are required to pay a monthly fee calculated according to family income.
