One of the most popular forms of transportation in Bologna is the motorino (scooter). You don't need a license to drive one unless the cilindrato (horsepower) is over 50ccs, but you are always obliged wearing a helmet.
To find dealerships offering new and used motorini, check yellow pages under the listing motocicli e motocarri. You can also check the classified newspapers:

Secondhand scooters
If you buy secondhand, make sure you obtain the "certificato per ciclomotore" (title), which contains technical information you will need to give the mechanic if the bike breaks down.
In order to drive your motorino legally, you need to do three things: get a targa (license plate), buy insurance, and pay a government tax.
Getting your targa
You get your targa from the Motor Vehicles Registry. Call to find out which documents you need. You'll need a marca da bollo, which you can buy at the tabaccheria next to the registry.

You can also find information on the site of the Automobile Club Bologna (http://www.acibologna.com/ - Italian version).
Insurance agencies can be found in the yellow pages under the listing ASSICURAZIONI.

Once you have a license plate and insurance, you must pay a tax, which means you need a marca da bollo. Ask the current amount of the tax at the Motorizazzione civile or in the tabaccheria.
